Day trips by boat, when they are worth it
Day trips by boat in the Greek islands can be magical, or just windy and exhausting. I have done several, from Koufonisia to Amorgos, and here is when they are really worth it and what to check, so you do not end up fighting the meltemi in flip flops.
⛵ Private or group tour, choose your vibe
If you want music, people, fun and lots of photos, a group boat tour is perfect, you will meet people and come back with stories and stories. If you prefer quiet moments, swimming in small coves and taking photos that look like “secret beach, just us”, then a private boat trip is the way to go. From Koufonisia, for example, a boat trip towards Pori or Gala is already an experience by itself.
🌊 Weather, meltemi and cancellations
In summer the wind can change the whole schedule, or even cancel the trip. Always check the forecast and read carefully the cancellation policy. Good companies inform you in advance and offer another date or full refund if the weather does not allow a safe trip.
🧴 What to bring (and what to leave at home)
My friend Maria laughs because I always pack half the house in my backpack, but when her phone almost falls in the water, she remembers who brought the waterproof case. These are the real essentials for any day trip by boat in the Cyclades:
🧴 SPF50 face sunscreen
The reflection of the sun on the water is stronger than you think. Do your skin a favour and do not forget a good SPF50 face sunscreen.

For photos in the water or simply to avoid turning your phone into a salty souvenir. One small accessory, zero stress every time someone splashes near you.

Sun on deck feels stronger than on the beach. Water in a plastic bottle gets warm very fast, so a good travel flask is a life saver, and a solid hat makes the whole difference on a windy day.

Perfect to capture the blue of Amorgos and the caves around Koufonisia without worrying about water. Maria once filmed a monk seal, I only managed to film my own finger.

- Always ask if there is shade on the boat, especially for midday trips.
- Bring a second swimsuit, nothing worse than sitting in a wet one on the way back.
- Wear non-slip shoes or sandals with a strap, not loose flip flops that fly away with the wind.
- Check if the tour includes food or snacks, or if you should bring something with you.
